400 (well, 300) SNG Day Thoughts
Posted by MaxApr 6
So yesterday I set a goal to play 400 SNGs in a day because I wanted to play more when I a) felt tilted and b) didn’t feel like playing.
I ended up playing 300 because something came up that ate up 3 hours of my time, however I still feel like my day was a win. I ended up about 2k, running significantly over EV. As I sat there looking at my graph, I realized that I care way too much about EV (which, especially on a day to day basis, is pretty irrelevant). In fact, I was using it as an excuse to not think about how I can improve. As long as I saw the EV line higher than my winnings, I was reassured that I was playing well. But I didn’t need an EV line to tell me that. At the end of yesterday, I knew that I played well for most of the day. I could tell from my strategy, the opponents I encountered, and from recalling that I was clearly outplaying my opponents much more than they were outplaying me. If I rely on my own assessment of how well I played rather than an EV line, I’m going to figure out more ways to improve my game.
One thing that was disappointing was I ran well, which means I didn’t have to really play through tilt at any point. I may do this again, hoping to run through a bad luck streak so I can really experience playing through pain. For now though, I’m happy with the way it went.
