So Danny and I left LA yesterday with not much to brag about. We both play the 5k hu and 5k main event while we were there, and neither of us cashed in either tournament. In the HU, I drew Andrew Lichtenberger aka Lucky Chewy first round. It was definitely a poor draw, he’s a great hu cash player and experienced in live play. However, the structure played to my advantage as the stacks got shallow pretty quickly and I had a clear edge on him 50bb and less play. Sadly I ended up losing to him 2-1 in a best of 3, I feel the matchup was pretty even. Danny also had a poor draw, drawing Justin Bonomo in the first round but Danny ended up owning him 2-0. He drew ADZ in the 2nd and lost 2-0.

In the Main Event, I made it about 4 hours into the 2nd day before busting. I never really got a big stack or any momentum, but I feel like I played the whole tournament quite well (Most people were looking at me like I was retarded, which means I must have been playing exceptionally well).

Here’s an interesting hand from the hu:

1) Hu vs luckychewy about 120bb deep. Chewy had really not 3bet at all when we were 200bb deep at the start of the match, but the blinds had just went up and I assumed he was going to start 3betting lighter. I pick up KQ otb, stacks are 12k effective, 50/100 blinds. I raise to 300 and he makes it 900 or 1000. I Call.

Flop comes AK2 all hearts (I have no hearts)

He cbets to 1200 or so, I call. I feel like since a) He has probably 3bet once prior to this and b) it’s a scary board, he may be inclined to 3barrel here.

Turn comes a 2.

He bets 2800 or so. The 2 actually makes the hand much more confusing. If the board blanked out, I think he would be pretty confident about tripling me off a bad Ace. With the 2 however, every A is essentially the same and I kind of worried that he may shut down thinking it will look like he’s trying to get me off a chop. Still, I had the sense he was wide preflop which means that he’ll have a lot of air when he gets to this point, and he’ll probably want to bluff it.

I call with the intention of probably calling down.

River is Q.

He shoves for what seems to be about pot or a little more. This card is basically irrelevant. I’m pretty sure I’m going to call but decide to review the hand in my head for a second. I look at him and see that he’s leaning back but his eyes are really shifty. He’s isn’t looking at me but constantly moving his eyes to every spot that I’m am not. I feel like this is very weak, it almost seems as if he’s trying to portray that he’s comfortable by leaning back a bit but failing to hide it completely.

I call, he shows 67dd for nada. :o )

I busted out of NAPT LA within a couple hours. I just basically lost every pot I played, standard tournament variance. But losing the tournament turned out to be a good thing in one sense: It gave me the opportunity funniest poker hand I’ve ever been a part of. And I couldn’t have orchestrated it more perfectly.

So after I bust out I head over to the live cash tables to find my brother Aaron. To kill time we decide to play at a 2-3, 300 dollar buy in table together. After about an hour I have accumulated a pretty large stack, 1,100 or so, playing totally insane. A wave of new people come to our table, including a dirty looking young fellow with a mullet and country singer like facial hair. He is using a bunch of poker jargon and is acting generally like a live regular. Thankfully, he hasn’t seen my crazy play.

Not so long after he joins the table I pick up AdTd in the BB. Mullet dude raises UTG to 15 (standard in this game), guy calls in early MP, and I call in the BB. Both opponents have about 100bbs. Pot is now 48. The flop comes Th9h5s. I check, Mullet dude cbets to 40, MP folds, I call. Turn is the 6h, completing the flush draw. At this point I decide to turn my hand into a bluff and bet out 70, intending to bet all in on non heart rivers.

He doesn’t think for that long before turning to me and asking me “Would  you say you think you play well in general?” The table laughs. I think, at first, not to say anything, but then I realize what he means. By play well, he means am I “stupid” enough to be betting less than a flush here. So instead of silence I respond “Well, I think I play pretty well.” After about 5 seconds he folds KhKx face up.

I couldn’t help myself. I muster up the most surprised look on my face I can, flip over my hand slowly, and say…

“Wow, all I had was top pair!”

He stands there stunned for a few seconds. “Well I guess that answers the question of whether you play well or not.”

…God I love turning made hands into bluffs.

I’ve been playing this player Fisfarfar recently who has been totally destroying me. He actually plays pretty well, despite the fact he has a short history of success at SNGs.

Here’s the relevant reads on this hand. He has been 3betting me about 26% at this blind level. He doesn’t tend to 3bet twice in a row as a bluff, and he has not 3bet me too recently (aka no reason to think he is not 3betting light). His flop cbetting range is pretty polarized, he doesn’t tend to bet bad midpairs or bottom pairs. He also tends to balance his nut hands well, in other words I would not be too surprised to see the nuts here.
